Waterbug survey in Wollombi Brook catchment – Part 2
A waterbug survey was carried out in September 2024 by Hunter Local Land Services and The Waterbug Company and the overall results indicate an overall fairly good water quality rating in Wollombi Brook catchment.
The comprehensive survey involved taking samples collecting waterbugs at 30 sites to assess the water quality in Wollombi Brook, Watagan Creek, Congewai Creek, Narone Creek and Stockyard Creek. Changes in land use throughout the catchment correlate to water quality and the diversity of waterbugs reflected this in the survey. At sites with intensified landuse, fewer sensitive species including mayflies and damsel flies occur, while more tolerant species including bloodworms and freshwater snails were found. Landowners can use this survey method as a way to check the water quality of their creeks.
These surveys reflect the impact of habitat restoration projects supported by Local Land Services with the local community and help us guide conservation actions and evaluate their effectiveness in improving waterway health
